Festival Xtreme building

Hi all,

As some of you may already know, Claire Farrell, part-time student with us , is organising the Xtreme building festival in Birmingham and the launch night is planned for Friday 8th June.

She will be needing help from all of us in order to make this event as big and as fun as possible...I will be helping at the private launch night on the 8th June and want to make sure that other people from the MA class will be involved.
It's important for us as viscom students to be an active part of the Birmingham art scene as well as to show our support to one of our classmate's project.

We will require your presence from 4.30pm until about 8/9pm on Friday 8th June.

A rehearsal will also take place on Sunday 3rd June at 4.30pm.

I hope some of you will be free to come around and help, don't forget it'll be fun and the private launch night will be followed by a wicked afterparty.

Get in touch with Claire for more informations or have a look at the website:

Intangible Cultural Heritage.?????

Intangible Cultural Heritage.?????

A non phyiscal characteristic...

* oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage;
* music, dance, drama and other performing arts
* social practices, rituals and festive events;
* knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;
* foods and clothing
* and traditional craftsmanship

The intangible cultural heritage is transmitted from generation to generation, and is constantly recreated by communities and groups, in response to their environment, their interaction with nature, and their historical conditions of existence. It provides people with a sense of identity and continuity. Its safeguarding promotes, sustains, and develops cultural diversity and human creativity.

Story Telling....Appearance.... Mannerisms......Any other good ideas ????

SUMMERTIME AT UNI

Hey people,

i think is good that we started to talk about the final show etc...but we need to remember summer and what we still need to do. As I know from the last year the uni is in july and august at some point in the holiday state of mind. So we should take care of all resources we can get which means printers, computers, labs, darkrooms etc.

WHAT DO WE NEED?
colour laser printer
ink jet printers
darkroom for B&W
scanners
macs and pcs
equipment to hire
what time is the uni open...

I think there should not be any problems at all but we have to take care of all these issues.....
Is there anything new from the meeting on Thursday about the show. Please keep us informed and i think this blog is a great platform for it.

Have a good weekend
Krystof

Will you be my date for the prom?

Hi, just wondering if anyone (you locals) know of any "high school" proms/end of year school dances going on in/around birmingham in the next month or so? I don't really want to call up schools asking for the dates and locations because I think I might come off as a little bit of a perv. You know? I have found one at the botanical gardens at the end of june. Anyone know of others? Please pass on dates and locations to me if you do! Thanks

HELLO I need help

Hello all

I recently finished my MA, directing a film/animation. Ive been taking my work around to a lot of studios in london and got some people very interested. Im currently pitching for a music video and short film both of which will be low budget. But at the same time I potentially have another short film and commercial big budget advert to direct in the coming months.

I need a producer to help me out. Basically youl need to be organised, well spoken ( good english only ), enthusiastic, hard working and have an understanding of animation and film. Also to be able to get on with me of course, quite an easy task.

Some work will be paid some wont, but all will be interesting fot your portfolio.

My work can be seen here www.myspace.com/retrovideo

If any one is interested get in touch
Steven

Hello audience's visual

I'm just wondering if you can be the first of audience who get into the concert hall, at which position will you be happy to stand and watch the concert?

I took this photo yesterday at Carling Academy Birmingham and I prefered standing a bit away from stage to the place at first row. At first, I didn't like the guy who often blocked my view from stage.After that, I realized that tousands of people's heads moving in front of me(also waving their arms,hands)made me feel more enjoyable(although I knew only one MIKA 's song)

Only half frame is the visual proportion in my eyes that I can see the band, another half frame was audience. But I didn't feel that audience's half was my obstacle any more.I still felt good.

In previous concerts,I used to pay more for the very first seating row.Now I pay less....but I got more.

WHO ARE WE?

Can you all comment on this posting with a brief introduction to yourself, your field of practice and the URL for your blog.

This would create a one page directory of who we all are, which would come in useful when looking for advice from other students.

Keep it to five lines max.

Puzzling Crossword Puzzlers

It all started with Poems, Sausages and a trip down to the pub. This is what 8 of us have come up with for Phills Assignment.

SHO-SHAY-GESH..

Hair is the reflection of the personality

I have been researching on hair and how it communicates as a visual element. At the moment i am trying to find ways to put this out there so that the public can participate in this exercise; or at least learn from it. I have tried wigs, salon hair dressing and even produced beauty product packaging. I am now toying the idea of hair as a mask.

Hair is a reflection of the personality. So what if I hide the primary features of an individual with a mask. What if the mask is the hair. Will the hair still reflects on the personality or does it need the face features to work as a package?

Yet this does not contribute to the society. How can i bring this to the next level?

I borrowed a hammer......

I borrowed a hammer from the neighbour and squared up to the screen of this giant glass beast. The best approach to destroying this glass funnel object was to stand backwards facing away, not meaning that I was in effect turning my back on the enemy but to protect myself from any harm. This would prevent any glass from damaging my eyes and hopefully protect me from any dangerous flying fragments. In the corner of my eye I could see the point at which I wanted the hammer to connect, I took one step forward and swung my arm up and forwards, when my arm had swung half way up a then stepped back and began to swing backwards… BANG… A strange silence then followed. To my amazement when a turned around to inspect the damage a was stunned to find that the hammer had not even chipped the surface of the screen. The glass like substance appeared to be indestructible. I prepared myself for a second assault on the glass monster. Another backwards but even harder swing…BANG…silence again and when I turned to inspect the damage I could see that the beast was hurt. A very tiny but insinicatant splinter, the kind a thing you seen on a car windows screen when a small stone has been flung up from the road. If it could be damaged then it can be destroyed I thought to myself.

Again I squared up to stand against the beast, Hammer in hand and confidence in my head and heart a swung at the monster with all my might…BA…BANGGGGG.The screen exploded into a million tiny particles, showering me from head to foot.
The room was filled with a dirty black cloud of smoke and room had become black hole full of glass splinters reflecting light through this toxic and foul stinking mixture of dust, glass and gas. For a brief second I was captivated by the silence and light rays shinning and flicking from the suns rays amongst this toxic cloud of smoke, from destruction a strange beauty had been created, filling the room. After about ten seconds I thought it best to escape this room in case the strange gas substance leaking out of this now smashed glass funnel was dangerous to my health.

As I opened the window and dashed through the door I turned to see what damage had been done, the room was a complete mess.As I began to try and bring order back to this room I couldn’t help but notice how each individual glass splinter had it’s own totally unique and individual beauty, The lines and shape, the colour and feel, the way in which light reflected of the surface. It would be impossible to produce or design just one mark on this totally unique form. As the light shown into this dark and dusty room the effect of the reflecting sun rays filled the room with a sparkling and breath taking light, It was like floating in space, seeing the sunrise and having a million stars shine around you at once. I could help but feel that for a split second I was in fact transported to another time and place.

What's next?.....How can I link my trip to Japan in with my MA work???any ideas.....

Help me find america

I am going to continue working on my "Finding America" photo project for the MA. Basically that entails me finding things in the U.K environment (interior or exterior spaces) that remind me of things I would find in the states. Up until now this project has been based on my own personal reflections - meaning that the photographs were based on my own history, personal experience, or based on (or relating to) images I have seen from other photo projects, tv, movies, etc. But I want to make the project a little more obvious and want to target a more specific "americanism" visibile in the U.K (think stereotypical american culture).

This is where I could use some help. I am probably a little blind to some of the greatest examples of americanism, but perhaps they are very vivid to you. With so many nationalities on this course everyone is going to have a different idea about what america looks like because of what the media in our home countries projects about america will be filtered, skewed, limited, etc. So please contribute if there is a theme, a custom, a tradition, an act, a place, a thing, a style ... whatever ... that makes you think of america or that you blame (or praise) america for saturating the world with.

Some ideas:
the prom
big supermarkets/grocery stores
24 hour EVERYTHING
drive-in cinema
jumbo-sized products
road-trip
american diners - think pie, coffee, waitresses, big booths to sit at
wild west
circus
open, vast spaces

No idea is silly. Please give me anything you've got!!

1 way ticket

Just traveling arroung, i'm a passenger.

Is it a vision?

What do you see in my photographs?

I'm looking at the phenomena of seeing shapes in natural things. I've posted some photographs I took in Sutton Park last week up on my blog in which I see other shapes.

What do you see in them?

This will form part of my research so your comments are much needed

Thanks
