There's a book you may be interested in (I have a copy still in storage somewhere - I was looking for it the other day but I can't find it).
It's the true story of the capture of a British botonist and his friend in Columbia by a militia group. They were there collecting rare orchid seeds as part of his research. They kept them hostage for over a year in the jungle.
It's a great book because despite their horrific experience they kept their sense of humour throughout.
